We are excited to announce the FIRST class in The Bean & The Guild Artisan Workshop Series.
This carving session features award-winning woodcarver, Bill Shinn, demonstrating a safe and simple way to successfully carve the “Spirit Man” by learning the basics of sculpting “the old man” in Balsa Foam using a tongue depressor. The techniques can then be applied to all mediums of carving as your abilities progress to carving in wood, stone, etc. Each participant will bring to life his or her own “Spirit Man” during the class.
Mr. Shinn has taught Visual Arts in public schools for 45 years, and has served as the President of the Tennessee Arts Academy Alumni Association in Nashville,Tennessee. He also served on the Arts Academy Board of Directors and is presently serving as Board Vice President of the Townsend Artisan Guild and Gallery. His awards include 2012 Best of Show in the Dogwood Arts East Tennessee Educator’s Exhibition, “Synergy”, in Knoxville, Tn. and twice “Best of Show”in the Sixth and Eighth AnnualTennessee Art Educator’s Association Exhibition, “Connections” in Nashville. Bill attended Concord College in WVa and Yale University. He and his wife, Suzanne are retired and reside in Knoxville.
