SMOC Summer Workshop Series Outdoor Basics

Join us for an exciting workshop series at the Smoky Mountain Outdoor Center in Townsend, TN. Learn valuable outdoor skills, engage with nature, and enhance your knowledge of the great outdoors in this Summer Workshop Series! Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to outdoor activities, these workshops are perfect for all ages and skill levels.

Dates: June 10, June 24, July 8, and July 22
Time: 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Start your day with a refreshing and educational guided nature walk led by our experienced outdoor guide, Ryan McNutt. This family-friendly event is free and offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while learning about the local flora, fauna, and natural history. Following the SMOC Walks on Saturdays will be short one hour workshops designed to help you learn basic outdoor skills. These workshops are for all ages and are free to watch. To participate you will need to purchase your supplies at SMOC.

Outdoor Basics Workshops:

Workshop: “Five Knots You Need to Know”

Date: June 10
Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Cost: $20 for supplies (optional)
Immediately following the nature walk on June 10, join us for an exciting workshop focused on learning five essential knots that every outdoor enthusiast should know. Led by Ryan McNutt, this one-hour lesson will cover the following knots: Square Knot, Slip Knot, Spanish Bowline, Fisherman’s Knot, and Truckers Hitch. Participants have the option to purchase supplies for $20, which include rope and a manual.

Workshop: “Give Me Shelter – Emergency Tent”

Date: June 24
Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Cost: $20 for supplies (optional)
After the nature walk on June 24, dive into the art of creating emergency shelters during this informative workshop. Learn the fundamentals of setting up an emergency tent and explore various techniques to ensure your safety and comfort in the outdoors. This one-hour workshop will provide hands-on demonstrations and practical advice. Participants have the option to purchase supplies for $20, which include the necessary materials.

Workshop: “Basics of Bushcraft”

Date: July 8
Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Cost: $20 for supplies (optional)
On July 8, following the nature walk, immerse yourself in the world of bushcraft and acquire essential skills to survive and thrive in the wild. This workshop will cover basic bushcraft techniques, including using a ferrocerium rod and collecting useful materials from the environment. Discover resourcefulness and learn valuable tips and tricks to enhance your outdoor experience. Participants have the option to purchase supplies for $20, which include the necessary materials.

Workshop: “Cooking in the Backcountry”

Date: July 22
Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Cost: Free (supplies provided)
After the nature walk on July 22, join us for a mouthwatering workshop focused on backcountry cooking techniques. Learn how to prepare delicious meals using simple ingredients and minimal equipment. Explore the art of making pine needle tea and discover creative ways to enjoy food in the backcountry while considering bear safety. This workshop is free, and all necessary supplies will be provided.

All workshops are open to the public, and anyone can attend to watch and learn. For those who wish to actively participate in the knots, emergency shelter, and bushcraft workshops, supplies will be available for purchase at a cost of $20 per workshop (excluding the backcountry cooking workshop, which is free).
