The Bean & The Guild Artisan Workshop Series

August 12, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

We are excited to announce the THIRD class in The Bean & The Guild Artisan Workshop Series.

In this class, you will be weaving a Southern Long Leaf pine needle rim onto a prepared gourd. You’ll weave enough rows to understand the spiral stitch and how to attach beads. We’ll also weave in our loose ends rather than knotting them off. The gourd will have been cleaned, cut, scraped out, inside and rim sanded, holes drilled, wood hardener applied, the inside finished off and painted black, and the out side stained and a coat of wax applied. You will pull the caps off the pine needles and will be shown the appropriate way to start and how to add to the coil. You will also understand how to wrap a coil and add additional thread once you’ve started.

The gourd, waxed linen and gemstones are provided.  In the sample, Unikite Fossil Gemstones were used.  You may pick between using those, Crazy Agate, Natural Picasso Jasper, wooden beads, or gold toned beads.

Bring with you a pair of needle nose or regular pliers (for pulling off the pine needle caps) and an assortment of large and small sewing needles.  If you don’t have sewing needles readily available I can lend you one and will have a couple of extra pair of pliers handy.

This basket can be completed in three hours for a novice weaver.

This class will be taught by the accomplished Kathy Janke. Kathy has been self employed for most of her working career and oil painted for about 45 them. When Covid made its entrance, she closed her Townsend bed and breakfast for a couple of months and decided to try something new. In fifty-eight days she wove twenty-four pine needle baskets and finished seven oil paintings. When her B&B opened back up and she sold what she had created, she sold the B&B and started a new full time career.  Kathy dabbles in several mediums, but concentrates in pine needle basketry and alcohol inks.
